Today, I’d like to talk about China, my heritage country.

China is a beautiful country with 1.4 billion people. It used to have the biggest population in the world, but now India has more people than China.

About 50 years ago, China’s economy was really underdeveloped, and people’s living standards were very low. But since 1978, China started reform and opening-up policies, and its economy grew very fast. So gradually, China changed from a developing country into a developed one. Last year, the GDP reached 20 trillion US dollars, which is second only to the United States.

My hometown is Shanghai. It’s the biggest city in China. Shanghai is modern and fashionable, kind of like New York City.

Chinese people, especially young people, work really hard, just like Americans. Some of them follow a “996” schedule, which means they work from 9 am to 9 pm everyday, six days a week. That’s really tough!

Even though the economy is developing, China also has some problems. One big problem is the population. According to official statistics, in 2025, the number of births during the year dropped by 17% compared to 2024. The number of births was much lower than the number of deaths, so the population started to decline.

It is forecast that more and more kindergartens, primary schools, and even universities will be closed in the future. This could affect economic development. One of the reasons for the population decline is that many young people choose not to have children. They prefer to be a DINK family, which means two incomes but no kids.

The government changed the one-child policy and now encourages people to have more kids. They give money for each newborn, hoping to slow down the population decline.

I think the United States has similar issues. For example, my daughter and son-in-law decided to be DINK. Some Americans make the same choice. But the US still grows its population because many young immigrants come every year.

When I first started learning English at school in 1972, before US President Nixon visited Shanghai, I still remember our teacher taught us this slogan: “Long live the friendship between the Chinese and American people!”

Finally, I hope China and the US can live peacefully together forever, and that people in both countries will be happy in the future!

     Thank you !
