记得齐邦媛讲过诗的简洁和深层。Sandburo用一行字并列拿破仑的大捷与惨败，接下来是南北战争的Gettesurg，一战的Ypres和Verdun。相同的战场景象，青草绵延，覆盖了一切。

我从新闻里看到空降师的伞兵们登上飞机，看到Youtube上应运而生的、对霍尔莫兹海峡的风光介绍。虽然从白袍和旗帜看，猜是在阿曼的这一侧拍摄的，但嶙峋耸立、几乎没有土壤也就寸草不生的岩石山冈，相信在另一侧的伊朗也一样。几乎是嚇到了，被凶险的地貌。
They left the peaceful river，
The cricket field, the quad,
The shaven lawns of Oxford
To seek a bloody sod。
我但愿那些空降部队不要被投下去，尽管女诗人说，

for country and for God.
哈佛毕业的 Alan Seeger在巴黎参的军，他一直在写诗，1916年初写了他最著名的《我和死亡有一个约会》：
I have a rendezvous with death
at some disputed barricade
when spring comes round with rustling shade
and apple blossoms fill the air --
1916年七月四日他赴了死亡之约，28岁，苹果还青涩时。
参军前住在拉丁区的Seeger是那个文学圈子中人。他生前就已经有诗名， T.S. Eliot曾经写过文章评论他的诗。 他俩在哈佛同学。Seeger的死亡之约诗1917年在他死后发表，1922年艾略特发表《荒原》。
读死亡之约，就会懂得艾略特“最残忍的四月”。
Seeger在诗里写，死亡要拉着他的手进入dark land, 合上他的眼, 停息他的呼吸。

and the first meadow flowers appeared.
《荒原》的第一段里展现dead land，丁香。 Lilacs out of the dead land。
