刚果（金）东部维龙加国家公园里的9只山地大猩猩在一周内接连被杀，其中包括一只临产的母猩猩。与寻常偷猎者出卖大猩猩尸体求财不同，猎杀者将尸体弃之不顾，似乎在对环境保护组织发出警告。有关人员怀疑此事可能与***武装或偷伐树木的犯罪集团有关。这起事件，震惊了全世界。

在频繁的武装冲突面前，当地仅有600名毫无报酬的志愿护林员，他们根本不可能与上千人荷枪实弹的军事武装相对抗。为逃离战火他们被迫离开，该国山地大猩猩便陷入了完全无保护境地，处境十分危险。

山地大猩猩数目极为稀少，目前，全世界仅剩600余只野生山地大猩猩。根据2004年的“人口普查”，其中大约有380只栖息在刚果（金）山区
