中国古代的妓女、尤其是清代以前的妓女，在中国古代的文艺发展史上占有一定的地位，从而形成了一种“妓女文化”现象。一些家妓、官妓（也包括极少数市妓）则是所处时代歌舞音乐艺术的代表，在推动中国古代艺术发展方面起了重要作用。
这样说，并不是在歌颂卖淫。“妓”在后世专指卖淫女子，而“妓”原是从“伎（技）”演化而来，“伎”是指专习歌舞等技艺的女艺人。中国古代如此，日本的古代和现代都是如此。所以在古代，“妓”是娼妓与女艺人二者的统称。二者有区别，但有时也很近似，卖身者有时要卖艺，而卖艺者有时也要卖身。
历史上记载的著名女舞蹈家很多。如汉代“色倾后宫”的赵飞燕原为“省中侍使官婢”，即家妓。
在唐代，谢阿蛮是宫廷舞妓中最著名的，她以表演《凌波曲》而出名，成为唐玄宗李隆基最宠爱的教坊舞妓。关盼盼是唐代徐州著名的舞妓，据唐代诗人白居易《燕子楼三首·并序》云，他出游徐州时曾应邀赴张尚书宴，首次见到关盼盼等家妓表演的舞蹈节目，使白居易叹为观止，于是即席赋诗来赞美她。
历史上由妓女中所涌现出的女歌唱家也很多，如许永新、念奴等都是唐玄宗时著名的宫廷歌妓。有一次，唐玄宗在勤政楼举行盛大宴会，但万千观众的喧闹声干扰了音乐声，使玄宗很不高兴。这时高力士建议由许永新登台演唱，以止喧哗，果然许永新歌声一起，顿时广场寂静无声，观众都被她的歌喉所吸引了。
张红红也是唐代身怀绝技的音乐家。她原为韦青的家妓，后以艺能被召入宫内，被代宗封为才人，人称“记曲娘子”。她实际上是个作曲家，她创造的“摆豆记谱法”是对中国古代音乐发展的一大贡献。
这种情况，历代不衰。例如到了明末清初，董小宛、顾媚、李香京、卞玉京等“金陵八绝”和陈圆圆、杜十娘、高娃等，都是名重天下的歌舞妓。还有王月生在南京朱市以吴歌著名，寇白门能度曲，沙才善吹箫，等等。她们的这些绝技，来自天赋，也来自后天的严格训练。
有许多妓女，文才也很好，在琴棋书画方面都表现出较高的才华。在这方面，唐代的薛涛、鱼玄机、关盼盼，宋代的苏翠、严蕊，明代的马守真、薛素素、范钰等，可谓代表。
在中国古代，几乎每个朝代的诗词精华都要被妓女占一席之地。例如《全唐诗》收录有21位妓女作家的诗篇136首。同时，还有不少诗词是歌咏妓女生涯的，如在《全唐诗》中收集的49430首诗歌中，有关妓女的就有2000多首，可见，妓女生涯已成为一些文人雅士的创作源泉。
和中国古代的这些高级妓女相似的是日本的艺妓。艺妓是日本历代首要的玩偶女人，是最好的艺术品。她们首先是“妓”，有时也出卖肉体，但主要是“艺”，以艺术取悦于上层阶级，使他们欣赏，使他们增强美感，所以有人说，艺妓象征着日本的美感。
既然艺妓主要是“艺”，就必须从小接受严格的歌舞和其他艺术训练，她们要掌握许多技艺、还要掌握一定的性爱技巧来为上层武士阶级服务，甚至包括皇帝本人。掌握较高的艺术水平，而且懂得如何取悦于男子，这是一般的良家妇女所望尘莫及的。在人类历史上，妓女从未像江户时代的艺妓那样对一个民族的文化起如此突出和重要的作用。
以上这种由妓女、尤其是高级妓女代表那个时代的文学艺术水平的情况不仅存在于日本、中国，而且存在于欧洲。恩格斯说过：“在雅典的全盛时期，则广泛盛行至少是受国家保护的卖淫。超群出众的希腊妓女，正是在这种卖淫的基础上发展起来的，她们由于才智和艺术趣味而高出于古希腊罗马时代的一般水平之上。”
