乔布斯的这座住宅占地面积17250平方英尺，已有84年历史。由于年久失修，乔布斯希望推翻这座住宅，原地重新兴建一座现代化豪宅。
这座古董住宅由加州著名建筑师乔治-华盛顿-史密斯(George Washington Smith)为美国矿业大亨丹尼尔-考恩-杰克林(Daniel Cowan Jackling)而设计，1984年乔布斯将其买下，并居住10年，后迁至帕罗奥多市(Palo Alto)。
由于是西班牙殖民地时期的产物，乔布斯发现这座建筑阴冷、凄凉，乔布斯曾经说过：“这是我见过的最糟糕的房子之一，维修成本远高于重建。”
2004 年，乔布斯向该房屋所在地伍德塞德市议会申请，希望彻底拆除这座老房子，并在原地新建更适合居住的建筑。市议会当时批准了该申请，但要求乔布斯将拆除计划搁置一年。
但此举很快遭到了地方文物保护主义者的反对，并起诉了市议会和乔布斯本人，称他们的行为违返了加利福利亚禁止毁坏仍有条件继续保护的文化遗迹和建筑的法律。(李明)
