年4月22日，在太平洋彼岸的美国，人们为了解决环境污染问题，自发地掀起了一场声势浩大的群众性的环境保护运动。在第一个“地球日”成功举办后，各国的政府环保部门和民间环保组织纷纷成立，“地球日”也因此成为多个国家共同的环保纪念日。1990年4月22日，“地球日”成为第一个“国际地球日”，有全球141个国家、2亿人参与，成千上万的各项活动在全球各地展开。
