当年自荐要演林黛玉的人非常多，据选角人之一、尤氏的扮演者王贵娥回忆，陈小旭的信寄来时，是一个沉甸甸的大信封，里边装着一封厚厚的自荐信，两张剪报(是陈小旭的作品)，一张画报封面和几张不同角度的小照，一切手续齐备。
画报封面是自荐者本人：一位纤细文静的姑娘，手抚着胸前的辫梢，一只手支撑在背后，坐在一片绿草坪上，显得那么恬静、秀美，眉宇间似乎还有那么一点淡淡的忧郁……
