美联社报导，这起事故发生于下午3时前，这名18岁男子当时与另外3名乘客同乘1辆马车，马匹失控后，至少有2名乘客被甩出车厢。
另据法新社报导，纽约警方表示，该名男子“从马车上跌落后受到重伤”，被送医后宣告不治。事故的确切经过仍在调查中。
从当地媒体拍摄的画面可见，1辆白色马车疑似与另1辆马车相撞后翻覆。报导并指出，车伕下车后，马匹疑似受惊逃逸。

代表马车运输业员工的“运输劳工工会”（Transport Workers Union）表示，车伕下车是为了替乘客拍照，此举是不被允许的。
这起事故发生的1周前，中央公园才传出1匹马因误食有毒植物死亡，初步解剖结果显示与中毒有关。
中央公园长期提供马车载客服务，颇受观光客欢迎，但也经常遭动物权益团体批评虐待动物。
纽约市长曼达尼（Zohran Mamdani）曾表示，他支持将马车自中央公园移除。
