　　美国之音报导，创立于1967年的「双橡村」环境清幽，吸引许多向往乌托邦的人成为村民。

　　村民像住宿舍一样，每10到20人住同一屋檐下。每人每周至少劳动42 小时，村内就会供应生活一切所需，不但样样免费，有健保，每个月还有75美元（约台币2500元）零用钱。

　　7年前迁来的拉斯．麦吉说，这儿不是天堂，但他不后悔。他说，这里生活一切从简，不太有旅游或艺文娱乐，但精神上很富足。

　　村民自己种菜、养鸡养牛，几乎所有食物都在村内生产。在村里住了17年的华勒莉说，村民耕种约一公顷的有机菜园，夏季吃自己种的菜，多余的就晒干制成罐头或冻起来，因此冬季也有自产食物可吃。

　　村民考塔说，村民可选择想做的任务，生活中能自行动手解决的都亲力亲为，修车、盖房子、教育子女都自己来。

　　双橡村也做生意，制造吊床和豆腐都有声有色，是双橡村得以撑到现在的另一原因。村民用这两项生意的收入买保险和车，村内的17辆汽车和其他物品一样，都是公用。

　　共享减少影响生态。考塔说，村内用电比一般居住小区少66%，汽油消耗少75%，固体废弃物少88%。

　　虽然双橡村的生活本质如同共产社会，但住了25年的达科塔说，退出村子的人后来大多成了企业家，有人经营平价商店、开豆腐店，有些甚至成为股票经纪人，「这个共享社会居然成了未来资本家的训练所」，十分讽刺。
