巨人台阶是一个由大约4万颗火山爆发后留下的玄武石块组成的巨大区域，它位于北爱尔兰东北部海岸的BushMills小镇。相传它是爱尔兰神话巨人 Finn McCool修建的，为的是更快的通过爱尔兰小岛去攻打苏格兰的巨人Benandonner。巨石一般呈六角形，像台阶一般一步一步一直延伸到海里。最高的巨石约12米高，厚度达到了28米。 玄武岩形成

是由火山喷发出的岩浆冷却后凝固而成的一种致密状或泡沫状结构的岩石。它在地质学的岩石分类中，属于岩浆岩（也叫火成岩）。火山爆发流出的岩浆温度高达摄氏一千二百度，因有一定的粘度，在地势平缓时，岩浆流动很慢，每分钟只流动几米远；遇到陡坡时，速度便大大加快。它在流动过程中，携带着大量水蒸汽和气泡，冷却后，便形成了各种变异的形状
